Aavanazhi is an action Malayalam film directed by I. V. Sasi, starring Mammootty, Geetha and Sukumaran. Balram popularly known as Karadi (Bear) is an honest Circle Inspector. Frustrated in his life after several personal setbacks, including a failed affair, Balram has turned to drinking and womanizing. Balram is assigned to nab Satyaraj, who evaded the clutches of the police after murdering a contractor. Balram successfully arrests him but only to be acquitted later by the court while being represented by Advocate Jayachandran. Balram's open fight with Satyaraj and his "outside the law" dealing with him forms the rest of the story.

The story begins with Mangalasherry Neelakantan's (Mohanlal) son Karthikeyan (Mohanlal), as he ventures out to make money which ultimately makes him a liquor baron. The relationship between Neelakantan and Karthikeyan deteriorates, as the father does not approve of his son's money-making methods. Mundakkal Shekharan (Napoleon) comes into the picture again after spending a term in prison for killing one of Neelakantan's friends. He decides to finish the Mangalasherry family by confiscating the house which was kept as collateral for Bhanumathi's (Revathy) treatment. Bhanumathi passes away and Karthikeyan is now bent on taking revenge.\nNeelakantan loses his home and Karthikeyan ventures out in an attempt to reclaim his ancestral home. In the meantime, Karthikeyan abducts Shekharan's daughter Janaki (Vasundhara Das) in an attempt to blackmail him (Shekharan), during which they fall in love with each other. The remainder of the movie is about how Karthikeyan manages to get his ancestral home back while Shekharan's nephew Mundakkal Rajendran (Vijayaraghavan) makes attempts to kill Karthikeyan, but instead kills Neelakantan by lighting him on fire and gets killed by Neelakantan after a knife throw which decapitates Rajendran. Karthikeyan, now infuriated, goes to kill Shekaran by burning him. But Warrier stops him and brings him back. Karthikeyan becomes the head of his home and the IPS officer gives Janaki back to him.

Anandh (Shaam), an MBA graduate, runs from pillar to post in search of job. He stays in the house of an old Brahmin whose daughter Chandra (Sneha) returns home following the death of her husband (Sharavana Subbaiya), who had been torturing her since their wedding. She slowly gets attracted towards Anandh for he shows love and affection towards her. Meanwhile, Anandh comes across Bharathy (Nandana Kumar) in a bus who misplaces his academic certificates. Bharathy is a woman with revolutionary ideas and looks after her whole family. A sequence of events brings them close leading to Nandhana developing love towards him. Meanwhile, Anandh comes across one Divya Daisy (Aparna).She is an orphan brought by up church and goes to find a job herself and settles in life all out of her own efforts. Anandh rescues her from an accident and rushes her to a hospital. Over a period of time, they become very close friends eventually leading to Divya Daisy opening her heart to Anandh. Caught in a tight corner, who Anandh decides to marry forms the rest.

The remaining story tells us how the brother and sister put pressure on Aarya to become a rowdy so that Aarya's status is equal enough as Kasi's status so that Aarya can marry Kasi's sister Deepika. Meanwhile, "Snake" Babu (Vadivelu) is elected the area councillor, and has a few encounters with Dr. Aarya, and one with Deepika. He is the main source of comic relief for the film.
