"Neelakantan (Mohanlal) is the heir to the well-known Mangalassery family. He squanders away his father's largess and good name, but is loved by the people who know him well. He has been the arch-rival of Shekaran of the Mundakkal family since childhood. During a minor ruckus, one of Neelakantan's aides accidentally kills Shekaran's uncle (Janardanan). This incites Shekaran to plan to avenge the death of his uncle. Meanwhile, Neelakantan offends Bhanumathi (Revathi), a talented Bharata Natyam dance graduate, by forcing her to dance in front of him in his house. In retaliation, Bhanumathi quits dancing and curses Neelakantan for desecrating the art so dear to her. Later he feels regretful and helps her family in many ways and tries to persuade Bhanumathi to take up dancing again, but she doesn't budge. Meantime, Neelakantan visits his widowed mother intending to bring her back home, but she passes away after revealing a terrible secret; that he was born of another man, out of wedlock. This fact crushes him, and only Bhanumathi finds out this secret when he curses drunkenly (at the car of his deceased ""father"") that the ancestral heritage which he is proud of, is actually not his. She is surprised by the vulnerable side of Neelakantan. He visits Banumathi at her home to persuade her to take up dancing again, only to be refused like before, telling him that she will resume dancing only after his death. That night while returning home from the visit, Shekaran and his aides ambush (by hitting him with a car from behind) and injure him seriously after also inflicting several wounds with swords and wooden sticks. Neelakantan survives the attack, but his left hand and right leg are badly injured and as a cure he undergoes Ayurvedic treatment to rejuvenate his legs. It is during this time that Bhanumathi falls in love with him (she is also regretful for having cursed him, feeling a bit guilty that the attack was somehow related to her curse). Neelakantan convinces Bhanumathi to dance and he arranges for a dance event for her at Delhi. He refuses to marry Bhanumathi considering her future, but in the end she and Warrier (his elderly right hand man) persuade him to do so. Neelakantan tries to forget all the past events and his rivalry with Shekaran, but Shekaran is not satisfied and wants to defeat Neelakantan in front of the whole village. For this he kidnaps Bhanumathi and forces Neelakantan to take blows in front of the public during a village festival organized by the Mundakkal family. Meanwhile Neelakantan's friends rescue Bhanumathi and after this Neelakantan mauls Shekaran badly and cuts off Shekaran's right hand, claiming ""Shekeran, I want to live peacefully..."" so that he will not again come up with revenge later. However while severing shekharan's right hand neelakandan uses the backside of the sword which shows the agony and power he had" more»

The story is a family drama about the conflict between two brothers who share the legacy of Ezhuthupura, a newspaper company owned by their family. Their roles as the main writers and publishers of a daily newspaper come to the forefront of their rivalry with each other. While one brother Devan has a clinical, business-oriented attitude to growing the newspaper industry that he heads, the younger brother Mohanlal feels very emotional and passionate about the craft of writing and reporting. He gives everything to enriching his relationships and cannot understand how to approach it with business goals because of writing, in itself, marks tradition, legacy and so much more in their family of distinguished writers. Ex-underworld don Zakkir Ali Hussein (Mohanlal), after giving up violence, is settled peacefully in the suburbs of Kochi. It was under the strong influence of his foster father, Bappu Haji Mustafa (Anupam Kher), that he left Mumbai. An unsuccessful assassination attempt on Haji Mustafa in Mumbai by Raman Naik, an underworld don ignites old wounds in Zakir. He, despite repeated pleas from Haji Mustafa and Ilanthaloor Rama Varma (Babu Namboothiri), a father like figure, sets out to Mumbai along with his trusted lieutenant Hamid Plavilakandi Mather, alias Malayalees (Cochin Haneefa). With the help of his friend Arjun (Biju Menon), Zakeer kills down Raman Naik and reaches back in Kochi. On his way back, at Kochi, he meets up with Maya Mary Kurien (Aishwarya), Asst. Commissioner of Police, who slowly starts developing a crush on him. Zakir Hussein is visited by Balaraman (Shammi Thilakan), a liquor baron and ex-MP, who warns Zakkir of dire consequences if he continues to interfere in the Mumbai crime world. He also attempts to woo Zakir, but the latter refuses to bow down, sending strong warning to Balaraman and his group. Balaraman, along with Devadevan Nambiar, alias DD (Vijayaraghavan), and Arun Naik, the brother of Raman Naik in Mumbai, is planning to finish off Zakir Hussein and Haji Mustafa to regain the lost turf in Mumbai. They are supported by Lahayil Vakkachan (N. F. Varghese), the tainted state home minister. Joseph Madachery, the IG of police conducts a raid at Haji Mustafa's poor home on behalf of Vakachan, and beats up Rama Varma Thirumulpad brutally, but the sudden arrival of Zakir saves him. Joseph is severely beaten by Zakir in full public presence, which infuriates Balaraman and DD, who try to demoralize Zakir by publishing fabricated stories about his relationship with ACP Maya Kurein and inmates of Haji Mustafa's poor home. Lahayil Vakachan tries to create a truce between Zakir and Balaraman, but fails miserably. This leads to a series of problems, including the arrest of Jaganathan, a close buddy of Zakir, on false narcotic drug charges. Jaganathan is killed in police custody. Balaraman and DD kill Rama Varma Thirumulpad, which prompts Zakir to take the law in his own hands. Mahadevan (Mukesh), Govindan Kutty (Siddique), Appukuttan (Jagadish) and Thomas Kutty (Ashokan) are four young men who live in the housing colony named 'Harihar Nagar.' The movie starts with an incident that takes place in Bombay, where a murder takes place for the possession of a briefcase. In the next scene the four young men make appearance with their tricks to impress young girls. A girl, "Maya" (Geetha Vijayan), along with her grandparents relocate to Harihar Nagar and happen to be Mahadevan's new neighbors. The four try to impress her on many occasions. One day they find her her posting a letter. They bribe the postman and manage to get hold of that letter. On reading the contents of the letter, they come to know that Maya has come to Harihar Nagar to learn about the murder of her brother - Sethu Madhavan (Suresh Gopi).Maya visits the house of Andrews (Saikumar), a friend of Sethu Madhavan. She requests Andrew's mother - Ammachi (Kaviyoor Ponnamma) to contact her if she gets any information about her brother. The four men meet Ammachi as Sethu's friends. They manage to get Sethu's photo by telling that they want it for the colony's sports club. Maya gets this information from Ammachi and meets the four guys. She believes them to be Sethu's friends after seeing his photo at their house. The four cook up a story about a an affair Sethu had with a girl. Hearing the news that four are the friends of Sethu Madhavan, they are kidnapped by John Honai, who wants the briefcase shown in the beginning of the movie. Maya was in search of her brother's girlfriend and she finds details of Annie Philip (Rekha), who was close to her brother from the library. Annie is now a nun in a church and adopted the name Sister Josephine. Josephine narrates about her history with Sethu when questioned by Maya. Andrew's father was a businessman who was killed by John Honai's father and he built a business empire with the money taken from Andrew's father. Andrews creates trouble in that business to take revenge. Honai's father then sells all his assets and tries to run away with that money in the briefcase. At the beginning of the movie, they show Andrews as the murderer. Andrews hands over the briefcase to Sethu since he is being followed. Andrews is killed soon after.Sethu comes to Harihar Nagar to give this money to Ammachi but when he gets to know that Ammachi is ignorant of Andrew's death and is still waiting for him, he gives it to Annie, who is Andrew's girlfriend.The four men who were under captive by John Honai manage to escape and are on a run. Soon after Maya and her grandparents are then caught by Honai but the four rescue them. Ammachi comes to know about Andrew's death from Rekha who gives her the briefcase. While Ammachi was cooking dinner, Honai comes to her house to get the briefcase. Ammachi removes the fuse and the lights go off. After a short game of "hide-and-seek," John lights a lighter. He goes in flames since the cooking gas was left open by Ammachi before he had entered the house.Maya is packing her bags to leave Harihar nagar. She meets the four before leaving and hands them the briefcase as a gift. When her car leaves, the briefcase opens and the money, jewelry, everything falls out. She shouts from the car that it is for them. The film ends here. more»
